Recognize the Indonesia Earthquake Map

The intensity of the higher earthquake in Indonesia, especially in densely populated areas in recent years to make Research and Development Agency Ministry of Public Works (Public Works Research and Development) launched the Zoning Map of Earthquake in 2010. This new map is a refinement of the seismic hazard map SNI 03-1726-2002.

"Many scholars and practitioners of the old proposes an earthquake map immediately revised because many large earthquakes in recent years," said Sumaryanto Widiyatin, head of Public Works Research and Development in Jakarta on Friday (16/07/2010)

Improvement of seismic zoning map was also based on the latest developments of science and technology seismicity seismicity at the national and international scale. Sumaryanto said the new map was based on the International Building Code (IBC) in 2006, and are based on analysis of three-dimensional seismic source with a period of 475 and 2475 years for the peak ground acceleration (PGA), spectral response of short period (0.2 seconds) and period long (1 second). "This was done to reduce casualties and material losses caused by earthquake," he said. "Which areas should be built and how to strengthen the structure that must be applied in buildings in earthquake prone areas."

This zoning map is expected to support the provision and development of national Infrastructure earthquake resistant. Seismic zoning map which consists of six maps that have accommodated all the needs, ranging from building construction, water and bridge building.

To compile this map is the Ministry of Public Works established a working team consisting of experts in the field, which originated from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics ( BMKG). "With the completion of the latest Indonesian earthquake map in 2010, the computation of seismic load on the structure would be more accurate and efficient," said Sumaryanto.

Sumaryanto expect local governments particularly earthquake prone areas can be followed up with seismic zoning map made of building regulations in accordance with the map. "We're going to socialize because of the existence of this map, local governments should be responsible for the risk of large casualties due to collapse of buildings caused by the earthquake," he said
